It’s officially here. Airtel has announced that it is bringing the iPhone 3G on August 22. After weeks of speculation on pricing and the final date for the launch of iPhone 3G in India, people will get a chance to bring home the most coolest gadget. But wait! You need a reality check before you throw away all your hard earned moolah on the iPhone 3G. The price is believed to be somewhere around Rs. 31000-37000. You could buy a brand new desktop with that kind of money. I mean you could assemble a really mean machine for this kind of money. So who wants to buy an iPhone 3G in India?
Not me for sure. At least not with that kind of pricing. I did not expect Airtel or Vodafone to subsidize the prices like the US provider AT&T but still I was hoping they’d show some mercy. People would still go out and buy the iPhone 3G anyway just to flaunt it. But if they want to sell a lot of iPhones here then they would need to do a lot more with the pricing. It’s not that pricing is everything but since most of the features just won’t work in India, the price needs to be justified. No 3G! Someone find me a place where EDGE works in India. I have my doubts on the GPS functioning for all parts of India. Then there are those iPhone 3G issues you feel you shouldn’t have read on the internet.
Then there’s Google which is currently pushing hard to bring out the first phone based on Android. HTC is manufacturing the phone which will be based on Google’s Android platform. Although it is nowhere close to iPhone or iPhone 3G but you can never be sure when Google is involved.
As of now I’ll stick with the classic Motorola CDMA handset that I have. It’s features include incoming/outgoing calls and SMS. It’s cool to me. For you, if you have some uncle/aunty based in US then you can order an iPhone without contract from AT&T which costs around $599.
