WordPress 2.9 – All you need to know to upgrade

in Tech

The wait is over. WordPress 2.9 is finally out! WordPress version 2.9 Carmen is named after jazz vocalist Carmen McRae. WordPress 2.9 brings about another milestone in the evolution of the most loved open-source blogging platform present in today’s time, WordPress. If you’re a blogger and you’ve been there for some time you probably know how cool WordPress is, you’re probably using one too! WordPress 2.8 brought about major improvements in the performance area while WordPress 2.9 is believed to bring out cosmetic enhancements and some really cool features apart from major bug fixes and updates.

So let’s take a look at what all you need to know to upgrade to WordPress 2.9. There’s nothing much to know about and you might have already upgraded to the latest version (thanks to automatic upgrades) but you might like to go through the new features or troubleshoot section.

What’s new in WordPress 2.9?

- The Global Trash Can

Does the constant, ‘do you really wanna delete this’ notification annoy you? Well fear no more, WordPress 2.9 has a global undo/trash can feature that’ll automatically throw everything you delete in the trash can. It works pretty much the same way as the Recycle Bin on your Windows based desktops.

- In-built Image Editor

No need to open up Photoshop or other bulky image editing tools for minor image editing jobs. If you upload a photo using the WordPress upload facility then you can edit images right there itself. It support basic operations such as image resize, crop, invert etc. Cool!

- Batch Plugin Updates & Compatibility

Now you can upgrade 10 plugins at a time. This will save a lot of people some time since earlier you had to upgrade each plugin separately. Also WordPress 2.9 now supports plugin compatibility check which uses data from the plugin directory to tell you if the current plugin is compatible with your version of WordPress or not. So no more worries!

- Oh oEmbed!

Now there’s no need to copy that ugly piece of code every time you have to embed a video or image in your blog post. You simply enter the URL and the sweet WordPress 2.9 shall take care of it, or I might say oEmbed shall take care. That’s magic! Currently it supports YouTube, Daily Motion, Blip TV, Google Video, Photobucket, PollDaddy, Flickr, Hulu, Qik, Revision3, Scribd and Vindler. There’s more support coming soon for other media sharing sites.

Apart from these there are so many further improvements that you’ll experience for yourself once you upgrade.

How to upgrade to WordPress 2.9?

Before you upgrade make sure you back-up your WordPress database. Although it’s optional and doesn’t matter much but I’ll still recommend you keep a back-up. To generate a back-up you can simply install a plugin (WP DB-backup) that’ll do the job for you.

Upgrading is very simple if you’re using a recent version of WordPress. Simply go to Tools > Upgrade. You can either download a copy of WordPress 2.9 and upgrade manually or you can upgrade automatically by clicking a button. Smart asses should choose the latter!

What if something happened while/after upgrading?

In case your themes or plugins fail to work after an upgrade (which shouldn’t be much of a possibility) here’s what you can do: Upgrade your theme/plugin to the latest version that supports WordPress 2.9.

In case your upgrade messes up your blog entirely (which, again, isn’t a big possibility) then you can revert back to the previous version of WordPress by uploading the previous version files to the web server and then restoring the previously backed up database.
