How Real is The Real-Time Web?

I wanted to write about real-time web for a long time now. Thanks to the currently slow status at Twitter, I finally found some time to sit down and do something constructive. Real-time web is fast emerging as a sort of necessity now. Things have somehow changed over a period of time. I don’t want to know what was written two weeks ago, no anymore. I’m rather interested in what people have to say about a particular topic this very moment. Yes this second right now. Services such as Twitter have become platforms. Instant messaging is engraved on every social network. I’ve got to know what my Facebook friends are up to.

So what exactly is The Real-Time Web?

In textbook terms real-time web is a set of technologies and services which allows you to access information as soon as it is published by it’s authors. Don’t confuse it with real-time computing, that’s an entirely different type of beverage. Facebook’s newsfeed and Twitter are two good examples of real-time web at work.

How does real-time web affect me?

Look around you. The web is slowly transforming. Information is critical and time is of the essence. Real-time web is slowly becoming addictive and highly engaging. If you’re a Twitter user you can totally understand my feelings here. Consider this scenario: You’re about to book tickets online for a movie. You search for user reviews on the movie, the real-time search returns short reviews from people who’ve just seen the movie and posted them online, you get to know if it’s worth your hard earned money or not! This is just one tiny example of how real-time web can change the way you look at the web today.

So what’s ahead and how real is real-time web?

Pretty real! It’s just the beginning. I agree Twitter and Facebook newsfeed have been there for a while to give you a taste of real-time web but things have just started to fall in place. Search giant Google recently implemented real-time search on it’s search results. New York Times now let’s users access to real-time view of all it’s stories. Cloud computing will act as a catalyst in the evolution of real-time web as platforms become friendlier to one another. However I fear service outages such as the current Twitter slow down could hamper with the entire real-time user experience. Of course it needs a lot of work as of now.

Alright enough of it now. I’ll post more on the real-time web soon. I better check if Twitter’s awake now. Yes, real-time web comes with a catch that it’s addictive!
