Facebook is now working on a redesign that should come out some time in 2010. Facebook is still working on the new design which shall hopefully increase usability and simplify the user interface. The world’s largest social network (now 350 million users) has a track record of continuously improving itself to suit it’s users requirements. Facebook has been conducting surveys on it’s site and carefully evaluating users feedback on their Facebook Lite design. Most of the new design features are inspired from Facebook Lite. Someone recently tipped off Om Malik of GigaOM about Facebook’s redesign. Let’s take a look at how the Facebook redesign looks so far.
1. The Navigation Bar
The new navigation bar has been simplified. It has now been pushed to the right hand side of the screen and there are no duplicate links for profiles now. I’ll agree with Om when he says the profile link and the profile name link didn’t make any sense when put together. Nice and simple.
2. Search
The search field takes the center stage in the new design. Search is a very important thing and probably something Facebook can look forward to expand in the near future. Also the new search field is bigger than the previous one, a clear sign that Facebook really wants you to use it rather than ignoring that tiny little search field that once rested on the right top end of your browser.
3. Sidebar
Although I can’t spot some obvious changes at the sidebar by just looking at a screenshot, it does however look inspired from Facebook Lite. Bookmarks is indeed a better way to stay organized and connected to your awesome Facebook applications, pages and stuff. Also the Facebook Chat remains right at the bottom right corner but the applications tab is gone. Awesome!
4. The News feed
The News Feed in the new design takes inspiration from Facebook Lite. In fact the way Friends, Events, Photos etc. are displayed on the new design, it seems like Facebook took the sugar from Facebook Lite. On a personal note, I like the new the Facebook’s latest redesign plan. I’m waiting for these guys to finish off and let the design go live.
