Just when you thought Google was everywhere, here comes the Google phone called Nexus One. There were rumors of a Google phone doing rounds across the tech communities until now it has been confirmed that Google phone is indeed for real. It’s called Nexus One. The phone will be built by HTC. The phone will be sold online and, don’t start jumping on your chair, will be unlocked. So there you go, no contracts, no mess. The phone might resemble the current HTC Passion phone.
Let’s take a look at some of the specifications that are out in the open as of now.
Hardware: HTC
Software: Android 2.1
Features: Capacitive touch screen, on-screen keypad, very thin (thinner than iPhone), scrollbar, faster processor (probably a Snapdragon chip), high resolution OLED touchscreen, large camera.
Launch date: January 2010 (still unconfirmed)
It is being said that Google has designed the entire user experience and it’s not going to compromise on it. The phone will be manufactured by HTC which is, in a way, a smart move. Microsoft had initially outsourced the first few Zune music players from Toshiba. Google has distributed the Nexus One amongst it’s employees across the globe to get a feedback. Some of it’s employees have been posting their initial reviews on Twitter. One of them claims that the Google phone is, ‘an iPhone on beautifying steroids.’ The phone shall be entirely tailored by how Google perceives a phone should be like.
Industry analysts as of now are pretty unsure about Google’s latest venture. I, on the other hand, feel it’s a really smart move. Google is getting one step ahead in taking over our tiny digital world. Of course the world is all set to compare it to other smartphones especially Apple’s iPhone. From from where I see it, Google has a point here. Now all of us are aware that there are already smartphones out there running on Google’s Android software. Now why would Google wanna compete with handset manufacturers who’ve promised to give Android a chance? The answer is not simple. Firstly, Google isn’t manufacturing a phone here. It’s simply outsourcing the hardware to HTC and branding it as Nexus One. Secondly, whether Google’s phone will be a success shall be depending upon the user experience which as Google has already claimed shall not be compromised upon.
Another key aspect here is the pricing. How will Google price Nexus One in an already saturating smartphone market? Knowing the phone shall be sold unlocked there’s absolutely no chance of a subsidy as provided to iPhone buyers Google will have to scratch it’s brains to come up with a figure that’ll attract initial customers. It’s very important since it’s the initial customers’ reviews that can make or break a device.
All things said it’ll be better to sit and wait. If Google steals the show early next year with it’s Nexus One, I can bet Apple will start working on a better version of iPhone (or have they already started?). One thing is for certain, it’s called Nexus One so there’ll be more of these in the future. I’ll buy Nexus Two (which should be more stable and probably cheaper!).
Update: A new set of photos of the Google Phone (aka Nexus One) have appeared on Twitter lately. Enjoy!
