Indian Railways hit a home run when they launched their online ticket booking portal for trains. Booking a ticket at any Indian Railways counter was such a pain. The long queues, the smell of sweat and the ultra slow officials who’d blow up their computers by the time it’s your turn, everything contributed to booking a ticket, making the journey ugly even before it began. Online ticketing not only added to the revenues but also made it convenient for people like me to book and print tickets at the comfort of their homes.
IRCTC is coming up with a brand new interface very soon. The new interface is aimed at making online ticket booking more hassle free and easy. You can try out the beta right now to see how the new interface would look like. It’s definitely much better than the existing cluttered user interface. There are some significant improvements like now you don’t need to enter a class while searching for availability, better presentation of seat availability, easily accessible navigation.
What I expect from IRCTC is to work on the support bit as well. There’s a centralized call center but it’s rarely accessible. Support by e-mail to IRCTC isn’t quick enough. I wish they outsource their support to some private firm to ensure better standards in customer support.
