Now here’s some . India is said to be developing a US $10 Laptop. The laptop is targeted at higher education applications. A research for the new lost-cost laptop is being carried out in Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai. Although no specifications were shared in the press conference today there are some indications that the Government shall be providing a subsidy. In the press conference it was also declared that the Indian Government plans to provide free bandwidth for education purposes to every Indian. Whoa! How is the sleepy Government going to do this? India is already in such a bloody Broadband mess.
The Indian Government did not sign up with the One Laptop Per Child program which aimed at providing low-cost laptops for educational purposes. Instead the Education Ministry felt they could do better than the OLPC program. All this while every superhero out there is having a hard time trying to come up with a $100 low-cost laptop. Some feel a $100 isn’t possible, at least not for the next few years. So what is the Government gonna come up with now? A $10 box of sugar to impress the vote bank? I say it’s going to be a $10 box of crap!
Update: It appears that the Government screwed it up on the number. Now it appears that they are aiming for a $100 laptop as per the update transcript. I wonder if that number would increase further.
