HT carried out a minor sting operation to collect evidence that management seats in private Engineering colleges are being sold at a price. It surprises me. Not the news they uncovered but the timing. This has been going on for ages now. It is still going on. Management seats are openly sold out to students depending on their choice of streams. Visit any college for admissions and it’s a fish market out there. Some parents are trying hard to negotiate the price while others are paying up, helplessly. It’s a usual scene every year. There was a time kids used to go to places as far as Karnataka for admissions to engineering colleges there. Now you don’t have to. Everything is up for sale here in Punjab. An engineering seat is just one of them.
While it is against AICTE’s rules and regulations to accept any capitation fees, the colleges don’t bother. AICTE itself is filled with corruption. Wonder how colleges get the shiny ‘Approved by AICTE’ tag even while the college is still under construction? That was money! Major private colleges charge anywhere between Rs. 3-4 Lakhs for a seat. It depends on the stream a student chooses. Computer Science and Electronics & Communication are the most expensive while Information Technology, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering are offered at a much cheaper rate. All you need is just about a passing percentage in your class 12th exams. No CET. No AIEEE. Welcome to the land of engineers!
