Music Review: Farhan Akhtar’s Rock On!

in Music

Rock on film music original soundtrack listen download In Bollywood you’ve got to make a name for yourself. And if you’re name kisses quality each time, your name becomes a brand. A brand people will follow like a religion. Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachan and Farhan Akhtar are one of those people. I went to see Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na just because of Aamir Khan. I’m sure a lot of people out there put their hard earned moolah into the movie for this very reason. Farhan Akhtar, the director made it big with Dil Chahta Hai. He’s back with Rock On!! Now here’s Farhan Akhtar the actor, the singer, the producer. Will he be a better actor than a director? That will have to wait. First let’s check out the music which was released yesterday.

Track Listing:

Socha Hai – Farhan Akhtar
Pichle Saat Dinon Mein – Farhan Akhtar
Rock On!! – Farhan Akhtar
Ye Tumhari Meri Baatein – Dominique Cerejo
Zehreelay – Suraj Jaggan
Tum Toh Ho – Farhan Akhtar
Sinbad The Sailor – Farhan Akhtar, Raman Mahadevan
Pichle Saat Dinon Mein (Live Version) – Farhan Akhtar
Phir Dekhiye – Caralisa Monteiro

The music has been composed by Shankar Ehsaan Loy. The lyrics have been penned down by Javed Akhtar. At first look this might look like Farhan Akhtar’s private rock album. He has sung five out of the nine tracks in the album. And dude! He rocks! He certainly does. The music is simply good to listen to. The album starts with Socha Hai by Farhan Akhtar. This is just some brilliant stuff as usual from Shankar Ehsaan Loy. Farhan proves he can sing. And he sings quite well. So say hello to Farhan Akhtar, the singer. The next track Pichle Saat Dinon Mein is an attempt to rock. Farhan makes it sound so good. The lyrics make it even better. Chances are you’re humming the song, the very first time you hear it! The title song comes next, Rock On by Farhan Akhtar. Say hello to Farhan Akhtar, the rockstar. Ye Tumhari Meri Baatein is a solid slow soulful song. Who the heck is Dominique Cerejo? I’ve got to Google her! The rock part is not over yet. Zehreelay by Suraj Jaggan is a neat one. Tum Toh Ho by Farhan Akhtar is another slow song you’ll wanna hear again and again. You can skip Sinbad the Sailor. The album ends with Phir Dekhiye by Caralisa Monteiro. The lyrics are simply amazing. On the whole an album as expected. Go get it! You’ll love each and every song!

Update: The movie is simply fantastic! Read a quick and cool review of the movie Rock On here!

5 Rishi July 9, 2008 at 7:05 pm

Rock on!! seems to be adapted from the background music from the film Lakshya during Hrithik Roshan’s ascent on the rocky mountain.

6 Harry July 9, 2008 at 7:09 pm

Yes it is! But then it was a Farhan Akhtar movie, with music composed by Shankar Ehsaan Loy. So they’re free to do whatever they want to with the tune.

Anyways, the track Rock On!! is still my favourite one!!!!

7 Pratyush July 9, 2008 at 9:48 pm

“Pichle Saat Dinon Mein” rocks (especially the live version – it creates that feel) , Farhan sounds much better than that Atif.

I feel this is the new era of Bollywood music. It has overtaken western rock & pop. Nowadays, more often than not I find myself loving our very own bollywood music rather than western Hits ?!!? (are there any like they made em before ?). Case in point Jaane Tu.. ( the jazz number is up there with Sinatra , Pappu Rocks!!) and now this..Rock On!! Makes me beam with pride at our Indian Talent. Way to go …Rock On Dude!!!

aasma hai neela kyun
paani geela geela kyun
gol kyun hai zamee
silk mein hai narmi kyun
aag mein hai garmi kyun
do aur do paanch kyun nahi

ped ho gaye kam kyun
teen hain ye mausam kyun
chaand do kyun nahi
duniya mein hai jung kyun
behta laal rang kyun
sarhaden hain kyun har kahin
socha hai… ye tumne kya kabhi
socha hai… ki hain ye kya sabhi
socha nahi to socho abhi

‘Socha hai’ simply rocks!!!!!!!!!

20 Ridhima July 16, 2008 at 2:22 pm

“I feel this is the new era of Bollywood music. It has overtaken western rock & pop.” – Dude…I think you need some reality check.

In my opinion, Rock on is nowhere near what you call in classical terms “Rock”. The music is ordinary and lacks the edge of a real Rock song.

I don’t know why everyone is going all ga ga over it. Radio City review too treads the similar line. Thats sad

21 sharat July 17, 2008 at 3:43 pm

socha hai simply rocks.farhan is a true genious.he sounds superbbbbbbbbbbb.

22 Sworup July 21, 2008 at 11:16 pm

I’ve listen to the songs. I don’t think Farhan is great but he makes it work considering this is a movie. I tell you why he isn’t great:
1. He tries to scream like he’s in Iron Maiden or something… once he even tries to scream as Steven Tyler… obviously he doesn’t have the voice to do that.
2. He has a good voice to consider professional singing, maybe some pop songs definitely not hard enough to rock on.
3. Sankar Ishan Loys rifts and beats are bangin’, they sure rock…
4. Javed Akhtars lyrics are good for some pop version not definely the rock music this music is gonna represent. Javed Akhtar is a old dude who looks at the sunset, sea shores and two heart shaped baloons while writing songs…. the lyrics sounds 100% FAKE. Since it does sound like is written by some controlled dude with wife and kids… really fucked up lyrics.
I give Lyrics a 1.5, vocals a 3 and music a 4.5, in scale from 1-5; that of cource I have give stars here.

23 Sworup July 21, 2008 at 11:21 pm

And ya I can say without any official feedbacks that Farhan Akhtar is an Aerosmith fan. Since that’s what he ties and fails to be the whole album.
And by this review you can say that I’m one too… not that I care if you don’t care.

24 Arindam July 24, 2008 at 12:05 pm

Farhan does a decent job and he deserves kudos for his efforts. Personally, “Socha hai” is very refreshing to hear and it doesn’t matter whether Farhan is a fan of a certain band or not. He sings, he conquers, period.

25 Chintan July 29, 2008 at 2:51 am

I dont think there is anything great about this album..farhan’s voice
lacks the finesse of a professional singer and it shows at critical points..also the ‘rock’ element seems to be too superficial..the songs are to simplistic and dont have depth..listen to some of the great rock songs..every hearing one seems to discover a new sound, that you cant resist putting in loop..nothing like that for this one..seems more like a wannabe rock album….

26 Sonal July 31, 2008 at 10:08 pm

i dunno about u guyz…but i simply loved every single song of ROCK ON!!…yep, every person in diz world haz hiz/her own opinion…Nd dey hav d right 2express it as well…so no probs…i hav already published my review 4 ROCK ON!! 6 reviews earlier dis1…if it helped ne1…i’m more dan happy…Nd if it didn’t…well, i can’t do nething den! Newayz…cheers! Nd yeah…ROCK ON!! :D

27 manish August 5, 2008 at 1:18 am

After getting through all above reviews i got one common point that is “Rock on’s music is such mein rocking”
whether it is lyrics aur music or say farhaan akhtar’s new avtaar(Rock Star).
As far as critics are concerned i will say it is their first attempt, they are doing something new, something fresh,so we need to encourage them.
IT does’nt matter that this music has a very less resemblence with the rock music of west, but we can say that the future of indian rock music is very bright and secure in hands of innovative people like farhaan, shanksr ehsaan loy and javed akhtar…

28 Siddharth August 8, 2008 at 9:47 pm

Socha hai is inspired from
Jimi Hendrix’ take on The Star Spangled Banner

Rock on is inspired from
Bryan Adams signature tracks

Zehreelay is inspired from Corduroy

This is One CRAP album..

1 out of 5 stars .

40 neha August 25, 2008 at 6:16 pm

ok..maybe they are a bit of rip offs..
but come on and stop comparing this music with
classic rock..
all we need to is appreciate farhan’s attempt at atleast making a movie on rock !!!
u started comparisons with led zep, jimi, pearl jam are u off your mind.
those sopngs are immortal !!!

41 neha August 25, 2008 at 6:19 pm

45 arun August 31, 2008 at 4:23 pm

its a great movie, ve been expecting this kinda movie for a long time, real eye opener to many of the upcoming rockers and teaches them the draw backs of ego and compromises in the contemporary rock scene, best part is robs love towards the band magik and the others for their determination and dedication towards rock music…………great work …songs are really good , i enjoy the song pichle saat dino me

The music rocks …. the movie rocks .. grt movie and music after a long time … kudos !!

46 sameer shenai September 1, 2008 at 10:57 am

Well if you listen to Music of Rock ON before watching Movie, then you wont get actual feel of the songs.
So watch the movie before listening to music ,then you can actually relate each song with its part in movie.

After watching this movie i must say Music rocks.More than what i expected.
Farhan proved that he can sing also Caralisa Monteiro gave a superb smooth track.

47 abhijeet September 1, 2008 at 4:14 pm

watch the film..its awesome…the songs make more sence there…well yes ridhima its not cery close to western rock..but its an amazing attempt..its a step towards great music which india lacks big time…i follow rock music a lot…and its a part of uk culture whri live..but i know that not all rock bands do have gr8 music…rockon is centainly better than many american rock bands…

48 Apurva September 5, 2008 at 5:32 pm

49 Rony September 10, 2008 at 1:37 am

HAve never seen such kind of rocking on movie till now in bollywood , this is one of the best rock music for this year , but farhan akhtar was focus a lot in this movie , ya film was made by him , thts the another fact , but over all movie was good , good rocking music, mostly music lover will like it

50 Samantha September 10, 2008 at 1:53 pm

Dominique Crejo is an awesome singer …her voice is so soothing and melodious… the song Ye Tumhari Meri Baatein is very adorable thanks to Dominique’s vocals.

She started singing a good 10 – 12 years ago.. I first heard her perform with a band called “Aqua Flow” in Mumbai, her voice stayed in my head since then.

I was pleasantly surprised when i heard her in ROCK ON! and i think she did an awesome job…

Hope to hear a lot of her in our movies ……

51 ruchi verma September 21, 2008 at 4:18 am

rock on really rocks and “Farhan akhtar really rocks “all the music lovers will like this movie for sure & this hectic life we really need this type of movie to feel relaxed …. GREAT JOB>>>>

52 Neetu September 23, 2008 at 12:51 am

I don’t think the movie deserves the hype. Too slow and dude…it’s like a parody on rock music! Extremely hard to digest.

53 Pronob September 23, 2008 at 1:36 am

Skip Sinbad the sailor? What are you talking about. Thats the catchiest song in the whole album.

54 PlaS October 25, 2008 at 11:57 am

WTH? Skip Sinbad? The lyrics are juvenile, but the picturization was good.

Check this comic review of Rock On’s movie formula – http://www.flyyoufools.com/super-clean-rock-band-movie
