Airtel has finally launched it’s IPTV services in India today. The service titled, ‘Airtel Digital TV Interactive’, combines fixed line telephone, broadband connection and TV on a single cable. The Airtel’s Triple Play Service will initially be available to customers in Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida.
Airtel Digital TV Interactive boasts of the following features;
- Interactive services like online movie ticket booking etc.
- MPEG 4-10 compression technology for high quality video and audio.
- Time Shift TV to record, pause and schedule recordings of TV shows for 7 days.
- Interactive movie on demand services with options to choose from 100′s of movies.
Customers can choose from the two entry-level packs to subscribe to the Airtel Digital TV Interactive services. These are;
Magic@ Home Pack – our Triple Play Plan – at Rs. 999 per month which gives 135 channels including 256 kbps broadband speed with unlimited download and a landline connection
Combo Pack – our IPTV and Broadband Plan – at Rs. 599 per month which gives 117 channels including 256 kbps broadband speed with download limit of 2.5 GB
The set-top box for Airtel’s IPTV services is currently priced at about Rs. 2500 and the two entry-level plans for IPTV shall cap the user’s broadband connection to just 256 kbps. My concern is; why isn’t Airtel keen on offering this to present Airtel Broadband customers and why do they need to cap the broadband to 256 kbps. So you could either watch TV through their IPTV services or enjoy a high speed broadband connection above 256 kbps. I won’t even think of using two different connections to suit the needs. Let’s see how things get rolling for Airtel. It’s a start for now!
