Pardon me if I sound too excited going by the title but it’s all happening. The race for becoming Indian version of Hulu has already begun. For those who just woke up Hulu is a website that streams ad-supported TV shows and movies from major TV networks spread across United States. Now most of you would argue that there have always been tools for watching streaming television shows online for ages now. I agree. But how many of you have found them useful? How many of them have been really working? How many were legal? None.
It started with Star TV India which recently launched it’s Star Player which allows users to watch a majority of Star network’s channels in India. Their website has improved over the time with more content and features. It’s the closest that comes to being the Indian Hulu at this moment. Although it would be a fantasy to call it an Indian Hulu but I’ll say it’s a decent enough beginning. What will be interesting to watch in the near future is how Star TV India expands this venture to make it an enriched experience for viewers.
Next in line is Indiatimes. The company has recently launched it’s product Live. The site features an array of channels a viewer can watch. These include Zoom TV, Times Now, Headlines Today, Star News, India TV and Star Majha. All channels are streamed live online. When it comes to quality there isn’t anything much you can expect from Indiatimes. Be it shopping or be it online TV broadcast the quality you get here is equivalent of those primitive live TV streaming programs we used to have. This isn’t an Indian Hulu although with a little direction there is a scope for improvement.
Apart from these two most news channels in India broadcast live streams of their channels. I liked how NDTV began broadcasting live on the Internet and CNN IBN followed the same. I still feel a centralized solution like Hulu is pretty much possible in India. Indian TV on the web will make it even more exciting when products similar to Apple TV and Google TV launch in India. Of course we’re barred from watching Hulu which is only meant for people based in US (there are a few shows you can still watch though). It’s definitely time for an Indian Hulu.
