Google is all set to step inside your set-top boxes. Rumors have it that Google TV (not the official name) will be launched during Google I/O that begins May 19. What is confirmed right now is that Google is indeed working in partnership with Sony, Intel and Logitech towards a platform as well as a service that will deliver web based content via Android based set top boxes.
Times has recently revealed that Google is currently testing it’s prototype which is based on Intel Atom processors on Sony built televisions. They have further stated that both Sony and Intel are hiring programmers who have a skill-set in Android. Logitech is working on providing remote control devices for Google’s next generation set-top boxes.
Google will allow programmers to tap into the opportunity by letting them develop applications for the Android based set-top boxes. Google will release a SDK for programmers in the coming few months. It’ll be interesting to see third-party applications on the big screen. Apart from Google TV, Android 2.2 (froyo) will also be launched during Google I/O.
Imagine being able to run a Google search while watching your favorite show on TV. If that doesn’t sound absurd then how about tweeting from your TV or updating your status on Facebook. Or even better – checking mails while watching Oprah. The web is everywhere!
I agree Google TV will make a lot of things convenient but TV is something I’d go for when I’m sick of browsing the web or when I need a break. I don’t want to see a huge pop-up of who’s tagged whom on Facebook while I’m in the middle of a suspense thriller.
On the better side, Google TV will empower you with tons of YouTube videos, download-and-play movies/shows features, internet radio, live streams and so much more directly on your TV. It could be everything Apple TV could never do what it was really supposed to. I just hope Google doesn’t disappoint international users.
