In the recent 48 hours the Google Phone has upgraded itself from a just another speculation to a fully featured smartphone device capable of keeping jaws wide open. I understand it’s still too early to comment about the Google phone (aka Nexus One) and it’s launch in the Indian mobile phones market but since rumors have it that Google is planning to launch the phone in US by as early as January 2010, it makes sense to think over Google’s worldwide plans. It’s clear that Google will sell the Nexus One phones in unlocked state. So Google won’t need to bother on partnering with mobile phone networks before starting to sell phones. However in the US it is tying up with T-mobile to offer Nexus One along with a contract. But then it won’t be a compulsion.
Google’s Nexus One will be a GSM based phone. The Indian smartphone scene as of now is pretty solid. We’ve got Nokia, HTC, Sony Ericsson, iMate, Apple’s iPhone, Acer amongst the ones battling it out in one of the greatest cell phone markets in the world. In a market like India it’ll be very interesting to see how Google plans it’s strategy to sell the Nexus One. I remember Apple’s iPhone was so eagerly awaited here in India. Apple had announced partnership with Bharti Airtel initially and then with Vodafone. We hopelessly expected some sort of subsidy as given by AT&T to it’s customers in US. The phone’s initial price price band kept a major segment of interested nerds away from the shops. Apple’s iPhone became the rich man’s device. Of course people did get their phones from US or the gray market. Pricing matters to a great extent in India, in case a manufacturer is looking for a large sale.
I am also not sure if people are more willing to give Google’s phone a shot right from the point of launch. Not until Google comes with something revolutionary. As of now the Nexus One is more like your wife in a really hot wardrobe. It looks awesome but you’re not really much interested. Not before the full specifications come out in the open, I really can’t say much from a buyer’s point of view. There might still be a hidden side to the Google phone which could turn our little world upside down. Until then, we’ll wait and see.
