We Indians have been waiting for 3G to launch like the Titanic waited hopelessly for a rescue ship. Unlike the Titanic, we cow lovers and beef haters have finally managed to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Airtel today launched it’s 3G services in Bangalore. Mind you, it’s a big achievement considering the amount of moolah they had to shove into some of our corrupt ministers’ arse. Nevertheless, we have made it alive to see this day. So did Airtel manage to convince everyone to sign up for 3G?
First of all – Airtel really showed some guts by launching before Vodafone. Why I say it’s a matter of utter bravery? Well mobile number portability has just been launched and for Airtel to come up with 3G tariff plans before Vodafone even wakes up to 2011 is worth a mention. Secondly – Airtel has only announced the Bangalore launch, somewhat playing it safe. The Airtel 3G tariff could be entirely different in a circle such as Delhi or Punjab for that matter.
Here are Airtel 3G plans for Bangalore:
Airtel’s 3G plans have so far not met many fans. And why should they, the plans suck to the core. Take a load of this one for example – a 10MB pack for 9 bucks with a validity of 1 day. Do a speed test on your iPhone and you’ll blow it away. Mind it, once you cross the limit it’s back to the 30p/20kb tariff. This is more like giving a lollipop to a kid and asking him to suck on it for eternity.
I’m not hoping for Vodafone to hit bully’s eye either but I have this suspicion that their plans would be somewhere closer to Airtel only. But you never know, with mobile number portability on, the stakes are much higher. Whoever takes a large chunk of early adopters would tend to get a better review (provided their services are at par). Let the 3G battle begin!
