Ever since the social networking bomb exploded in India I have been an active user of Orkut. I often used Facebook too but since most of my friends were dumb and unable to use Facebook I had no other option. Orkut did seem interesting and fun initially but now it seems like Orkut has hit an all time low. Harry tells me it’s mainly due to the shift of development in India itself. The quality has thus gone down. Well that doesn’t matter to me. I don’t care if it’s the Chinese doing all the crazy coding stuff but I have now started hating Orkut. Here’s why;
Orkut themes are irritating and useless:
The newly introduced themes on Orkut are not only irritating but they’re quite useless also. I know one can simply turn them off from the settings but doesn’t that defeat the whole concept of themes? Themes on user profile pages are supposed to act like a person’s face. The user interface must give an impression to the visitor. I love the way Twitter profiles look. Why can’t we have the same thing on Orkut?
Orkut Chat/IM
Orkut recently introducing online chat/instant messaging feature on Orkut. You don’t need a client like a messenger etc. to chat. It’s quite similar to the way Google Talk works inside Gmail. So every time you log into Orkut a green circle indicating you are online is displayed along with your name. Will this kill the Orkut scrapbooks? Scrapbook conversations were the fun element on Orkut. The moment I log on to Orkut a ton of guys simply start IMing me using this feature. I have to turn it off to prevent them from messaging me but then I can’t chat with my friends either. Even the scrapbook notifications are styled the same way the chat window appears. In face it’s hard to make out if it is a chat conversation or a scrapbook notification when the window pops up. Although most users will find it funny but I have noticed a large amount of delay involved in messaging. If it’s not your lucky day you might run into a whole lot of errors in the middle of a conversation. I wonder if those folks at Orkut know something about software testing.
Irritating ‘Bad Bad Server, no donut for you!’ page is a torture!
Orkut has never been kind to me. If I log in once a day the chances are that this page will crop up at least five times! Isn’t it time for those folks back there to do something with the server thing and all? I guess this happens due to excessive usage or load on the server. Why the heck can’t Orkut upgrade?
Orkut Captcha Pages
Using Captcha text confirmation is the best way to keep spam away. I read that all over the Internet. What Orkut follows from the lesson is that it must test humans too! Every time I scrap any of my friends a link to a web page or a post on the blog I have to go through the hell captcha test. Why can’t they just understand that I am human?! Can’t they limit the captcha test to just once in a day or something?
Orkut Applications Suck!
OK so Orkut tried to ape Facebook with it’s own version of the applications feature but it has failed miserably. Orkut applications don’t gel well with the current Orkut schema. It’s like a bumpkin village girl fitting into couture. It just doesn’t suit!
