Airtel Broadband Fair Usage Policy

airtel fair usage policy warning

Airtel Broadband recently handed out sugar coated lollipops to it’s subscribers with double speeds on unlimited broadband connections and a free 2 Mbps upgrade for watching IPL matches on YouTube. Airtel certainly went out of it’s way to become a non-seasonal Santa Claus. What didn’t get most of the attention was the silly little thing called the fair usage policy. It’s the one ingredient Airtel didn’t mention anywhere on the lollipop wrapper.

What Airtel did mention was that all the data transfer under the 2 Mbps upgrade, which is valid only on the YouTube IPL channel, will be included in a limited data plan subscriber’s usage. Those are the plans without a fair usage policy. But if you are an unlimited broadband plan user then you might wanna dig up the fair usage policy chart for Airtel broadband.

Apparently Airtel had migrated it’s unlimited users to double speeds over the past couple of weeks. So a 256 kbps user was getting 512 kbps without any change of tariff plan. I confirmed this with users across Delhi/NCR, Chandigarh and parts of Punjab. However most of the users have reported that they were again getting 256 kbps speeds after a notification from Airtel that they have crossed their fair usage amount.

I have been getting 512 kbps on my 256 kbps tariff plan on Airtel broadband in Delhi. I have currently a little of 4GB of data transfer on me for March so far. Mine is an unlimited plan and as per Airtel’s Delhi tariff plans the fair usage policy does not apply to my plan. However today I was redirected to some Airtel web page where I was notified (photo above) that I have crossed 80% of my fair usage amount. I was still getting 512 kbps until now, I received another notification which didn’t really tell me if I had crossed the fair usage amount or not, it simply redirected to a page in loop.

I am not complaining here. Not at all. If fair usage policy was enforced on me then I should be getting speeds as low as 128 kbps. But here I am still getting 256 kbps which is what my tariff plan promises. So no worries for me. In fact I’m pretty happy with the way Airtel broadband works around here. Touch wood.

U r still getting 256 coz as per the rule service provider shd provide min 256 kbps to be termed as 'broadband'. U wont be this lucky if u use a 512 connection wer ur speed wil reduce to 256 kbps after u exhaust ur fup.
