Studio 18 premiered Bollywood flick Striker on YouTube, a first timer for any Hindi movie to be released on YouTube and across cinema halls simultaneously. The movie was available for viewers from various countries except in India, for obvious reasons.

The movie is available for users residing in US for $ 4.99 through YouTube Rentals beta. Users who pay for the movie shall be able to watch it on YouTube for 24 hours maximum. Rentals is an experimental feature on YouTube which is currently only for US users.
There were however a few glitches here and there. Some non-US users claimed they were not able to view the entire movie on YouTube as it didn’t load properly on their browsers. Studio 18 later issued an explanation on their official YouTube channel that the movie shall be available again in 24 hours as they resolve the technical issues.
Striker is not the first movie to strike a deal with YouTube. Earlier the makers of 3 Idiots had announced that their movie will be available on YouTube Rentals within 3-4 months of the movie release. It seems like Bollywood is indeed headed for a major shift to the future. I wish they’d think something about Indian users as well but the current broadband situation doesn’t permit significant improvements of that sort.
