Airtel Broadband Doubles Speeds

Airtel Broadband seems to have doubled speeds for all it’s users. I have confirmed the same from users based in Chandigarh, Gurgaon, New Delhi/NCR and parts of Punjab. It could be a totally North Indian thing but until there’s an official word from Airtel there’s no proper way to explain this phenomenon.

My 256 kbps connection has been steadily giving me a sleek 512 kbps speed for the past one week now. I really hope Airtel isn’t messing with us so that we just end up consuming the data cap under FUP and they choke us for the rest of the month on 128 kbps speeds. I don’t think it’s a possibility with Airtel.

Now let me raise your hopes. I hope Airtel is experimenting how doubling the speeds for broadband users across the country will affect it or may be it’s a load-test. Whatever it is Airtel’s certainly got all it’s users happy! I hope this party never ends.

Free Google AdWords Coupons for Analytics Users

Apparently Google India is really interested in increasing it’s Indian user base at Google AdWords. Google today sent almost all it’s Google Analytics users, coupons worth Rs. 2500 ($50) which entitles users to register for new AdWords account and enjoy free advertising on Google’s network for the coupon’s worth.

The free AdWords coupon is valid till 31st March 2010. There’s no obligation on continuing once a user has exhausted the coupon amount. You can set up a new account, create a campaign and add the promotional code for payment preference.

In case anyone needs a coupon, let me know. I have a couple of them.

Update: Seems like Google has sent coupons worth $100 to users from rest of the countries. I have a few $100 AdWords coupons as well, just in case anyone needs them do post a comment below.

Facebook Zero Launched for Mobile Carriers

Facebook is playing Superman for mobile carriers who’re already choking on bandwidth. Facebook today announced the launch of Facebook Zero, a text-only mobile site, for a select set of mobile carriers. Facebook Zero is a stripped down version of Facebook’s existing mobile site.

You can access Facebook Zero at zero.facebook.com from your mobile device if it has been enabled for your operator. Chances are pretty slim although. Facebook will offer Zero to mobile carriers at no extra charge. Operators have the choice to provide it for free to their subscribe and if a user wishes to access data intensive applications like photos etc. on the mobile then an operator might choose to charge their users.

For Facebook it’s yet another method to add to the increasing the usage amongst mobile users, another step towards fetching Twitter-lovers.

HTC Desire is Nexus One’s Sibling!

Here comes the oomph. HTC announced it’s array of brand new spartphones at the ongoing Mobile World Conference 2010. HTC has been an early adopter of Google’s Android platform and has also partnered with Google on developing it’s Nexus One smartphone. HTC Desire has everything that Nexus One carries with a few uber cool enhancements. HTC Desire sports updated Sense and support for Flash 10.1. No doubt the 1GHz Snapdragon processor will be put to good use.

What makes HTC Desire so cool that is the Sense UI. Now that’s something you won’t expect from Google. HTC Desire features a trackpad instead of the old school trackball. The 3.7-inch AMOLED display looks stunning to say the least. But with Nexus One now a step behind, Apple iPhone 4th generation in the making and Windows Phone 7 series, will HTC sell as many Desire as it wants? Will you buy a HTC Desire? Selling smartphones is a voodoo science I tell you.

As far as availability is concerned HTC has announced that HTC Desire will be widely available first in Europe and Asia by the second quarter of this year. As expected there’s no official word on exact pricing but rumors are all over. We’ll not get into any rumors, expecting HTC will price it’s Desire somewhat close to Nexus One for sure. It might be waiting for how Google keeps it’s Nexus One sales by the time HTC Desire is available widely.

Hands-on iPad Gaming Videos

The folks at Slide to Play have released some hands-on gaming demos on the Apple iPad. The videos showcase games such as Need for Speed Shift, NOVA, Scrabble and Super Monkey Ball 2 on the iPad. Gaming is destined to get even better with the big screen version of an iPhone. As you all know by now that almost all iPhone apps will work for the iPad. However games and apps optimized for the iPad would be so cool thanks to powerful processing, big multi-touch screen and an array of popular games.

Here you can see the Need for Speed Shift on an Apple iPad. It’s not an optimized version for iPad but it still looks pretty solid.

Cool ain’t it? This has certainly got me excited. I am buying an Apple iPhone. More games and apps are expected to be optimized for the iPad by the time it arrives. I may not be a serious gamer but who knows iPad could change it for me.

How Much Does The iPad Cost To Apple?

Ever wondered how much does the iPad cost Apple? How much is their margin? Well as per a report from iSuppli, the Apple iPad costs about $229 for the 16GB (without 3G) model. The 64 GB Apple iPad costs about $317 which includes Bill of Materials (BOM) and manufacturing cost. The report’s estimates are based on hardware manufacturing costs alone and do not consider marketing, development and additional expenditure.

The most expensive component in an Apple iPad is the touchscreen display which costs $80. NAND Flash comes second with it’s price varying between $29.5 to $118. Manufacturing costs are between $10 to $11.20 only. The A4 processor that powers the iPad is expected to cost apple $17. The ARM based processor is expected to be manufactured by Samsung. iSuppli believes the mid range iPad sales will bring Apple the maximum profits.

Come April and Apple is all set to take over the tablet computing world.

Microsoft’s Zune Phone ‘Turtle’ Arrives at FCC

Looks like Microsoft’s Zune Phone, the Project Pink ‘Turtle’ phone, has arrived at FCC for approval. It seems like Microsoft has partnered with Sharp to make the Microsoft phone for them. This may be one of the Pink devices Microsoft plans to launch in the near future. Whether Microsoft will launch the ‘Turtle’ phone during Mobile World Conference this year is still a question on everyone’s mind.

If you take a look at Sharp’s application for the phone it is indeed similar to the phone Gizmodo revealed some time around last year.

Things are indeed getting pretty interesting now. Will Apple’s Steve Jobs admitting how Google might be trying to kill the iPhone with it’s Nexus One, I really wanna see how he sees Microsoft’s plan on making it to the smartphone sector with it’s Pink devices. I guess we’ll have to wait for the Mobile World Congress.

WordPress Mobile App for Nokia Phones

This is something I have been waiting for. WordPress is working on a mobile app for Nokia mobile phone users. Although there are a handful of applications out there (such as WordMobi etc.) that let you control your WordPress blogs on your mobile phone but none of them are that cool. The folks at WordPress are working on an official app for Nokia mobile phone owners. There are already apps for iPhone, BlackBerry and Android. The WordPress app for Nokia phones is currently under alpha stages of development. A beta version is supposed to come out in a couple of weeks.

I have myself tried the early Alpha build (screenshots below) and it looks pretty solid even at such an early stage of development. Can’t wait for the beta release. The WordPress for Nokia app is based on Qt framework so it will work on both S60 and Maemo platforms! Developers who’re interested can check out the dev blog for updates, source code and the alpha build.

For those who’d like to give WordPress app for Nokia a try, you can do so by following the installation steps below.

1. Install Qt libraries from here.
2. Install WordPress for Nokia client from here.

Note: Before installing WordPress for Nokia app please make sure you enable ‘all applications’ under the application security settings on your phone.
