We all have some precious moments with our friends at college, captured in photographs that speak for themselves. Live On Campus is running an interesting photo challenge on it’s Facebook fan page. All you have to do is upload one or more of your favorite moments with your campus buddies on their wall, tag your friends (if any) and add a description to your photos. The photos with the maximum likes and comments win some exciting prizes which include an action packed adventure trip to Rishikesh (camping and rafting), digital photos frames, large sized prints on photos etc. and even more.

Alice in Blunderland (Not in 3D)

Prologue

Once upon a time there lived a girl by the name of Alice.
Alice was smart. Alice was loving. Alice was all a man desires.
Alice sat for a test. Alice passed the test. Alice boarded a flight to UK.

The Story

Alice came down and settled in UK. Her post graduation had just taken off. She was in high spirits all over. Alice now held a promising future that made her parents and relatives proud of her every time they heard her voice over the cheap long distance calling-card-calls. After all she was a Gujju-girl at heart. She had everything going for her. From her clean apartment to her grades everything was nothing short of perfect. She was on her way to becoming the next Queen.

This is when things turned sour. For an Indian can never hide the fact from her heart. She fell for it. The deep devilish London nightlife ate her alive. She started going out with men. Things went worse when she started double dating. And triple dating. From daily phone calls back home to weekly, from weekly to monthly. The plain-Jane Gujju-girl was suddenly in rock star mode. She felt she was on top of the world as if she has won at Lotto.

It’s the life you once get into, you cannot escape. There’s no quit button to fast London life. Poor Alice could have realized she was on her way to self destruction. She needed someone to bail her out of her high society lifestyle. She flunked college. She owed people money. She couldn’t even afford an escape keyboard key let alone a ticket back home.

She needed someone. I always need a girl. Somehow God had this freak circuit switching technique that even most routers cannot afford. The connection was made (online of course) and Alice was in safe hands now. We started with getting her debt cleared. We then paid off her rent which was now six months overdue. Her grades are beginning to rise. Alice was now back in wonderland. I was in love-land.

You know it’s hard to find someone out here who helps you financially. Especially a fellow student who makes all his money doing odd jobs around the week. I didn’t even count the money I spent on her for I was deep in love with this Gujju-girl. Jassi’s, ‘Dil lai gayi kudi Gujraat di‘, played right inside my head 24×7. I was in love with Alice. I decided to tell her about my feelings. My utmost desire to touch her, hold her in my arms, go to the movies with her and who knows may be even marry her.

4:15 PM right outside her apartment, this is the time she comes down to call her parents, I stood right at the exit of the building to catch her by surprise. It sure was a surprise. But then I was the subject of the joke. Alice comes down with Mr. White Rabbit, arms in arms, smiling as if they’ve won the Lotto. Again. My face goes pale and I want to go back to my room, tune in to some desi beats and may be even gulp down a gallon of fermented barley but all of a sudden I couldn’t find my escape key.

It appears I’d been tricked. But then when I helped her I didn’t put down conditions. But then where was Mr. White Rabbit when the poor Gujju was in trouble? Am I just hallucinating? Certainly couldn’t be her relative, too fair in complexion. What kind of an executable file am I running here mate?

I turn away before the two, madly in love, see me. I make a run towards a cab and just when I was about to board one I realized I only had half a pound in my pocket. I smiled to the cabbie (who also happened to be a fellow sardarji) and asked my feet to bail me out as I told my heart to never fall for a girl.

Epilogue

I met Alice on video chat tonight. She seemed happy and Mr. White Rabbit was away. There was also a lot of meat in the graphical chat we had tonight. Look at her photo set above and tell me could you have stopped yourself from falling in love with her? May be it’s not Alice who was in blunderland, may be it was love torn Sardarjii like me.

Dhirubhai Ambani Stanford Scholarship 2010

It’s that time of the year again for all MBA aspirants! As if sweating it out for GMAT preparations wasn’t enough you now have to care about where are you going to get the dough to make you financially sound for the likes of Stanford. Dhirubhai Ambani Stanford Fellowship is a ray of hope for all MBA aspirants who have what it takes to make it there but cannot arrange the funds for college.

The fellowship covers 100% tuition fee incurred at Stanford Global School of Business as well as all the other fee payable while applying and attending the program at Stanford. It comes out to be around $85,000 for a single student and $95,000 for a married student. This program only accepts five candidates each year. Students are bound to come back to India after their MBA is over to work in the country for at least two years.

Engineering College Placements – The Salary

While sitting for an interview at an Indian B-grade engineering college you don’t talk about the salary. No sir, no way.

Interviewer – Alright you can go now. We’ll let you know if you’ve been selected soon.
Interviewee- But sir should we discuss salary now or after the selection?
Interviewer – [with a puzzled look] Salary?
Interviewee- Yes sir I believe I must sort it out so I can choose a company accordingly.
Interviewer – Just where do you think you are? You’re not sitting inside an IIT mister! This is not a 500,000 grand a year job we’re talking about here. You need to take off that thinking cap of yours and come to terms with the reality here. You’re the ones who chant unemployment slogans when you don’t get jobs. You’re the kind of people who would commit suicides for not making it to the top. You’re the ones you curse IITians. You’re the one who gives the whole engineering graduates a bad name. Just what in this world do you people think? Is it the movies that’s corrupting your brains or what? [and he went on]

Prometric Sends Letters to CAT 2009 Aspirants

It appears that the letter contains a personal note on why Prometric failed at providing a perfect student experience and also possible chances of a re-test. Engineering Graduates Are Unemployable. Duh!

A recent survey carried out by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and the World Bank suggests that 64% of the surveyed employers find engineering graduates of no use. Or in simple terms fresh engineering graduates are dumb asses. The report claims that a major skill gap exists which requires engineering colleges and institutions to focus on the employability factor.

The results of the survey are not surprising. In a country where engineering colleges are producing tens of thousands of fresh engineering graduates every year, there’s a clear understanding that somehow these factors shall remain untouched. Private engineering colleges have become roadside dhabas. There’s one after every few kilometers on either side of the road. It’s easier to get admission in an engineering college than anywhere else provided your Dad has a bank balance.

Curriculum is a major factor here. Most IT companies demand advanced computer skills and good communication skills. As per the survey, the companies are satisfied with the communication skills part whereas they find it difficult to hire a fresh engineering graduate with skills in modern programming languages and platform. That’s so obvious. How many programming languages are covered by most universities’ curriculum? Two? In some cases three? Even here the part that is ‘covered’ isn’t anywhere close to the level of solving real life problems once you get on a job. This is why companies like Infosys, HCL, TCS and Accenture hire fresh engineering graduates and throw them into a six month extensive training period. Only if someone could come up with an updated curriculum it could save everyone time and money.

This report is yet another slap on the face of our education system. I wonder if the relevant authorities even get a copy of this survey let alone reading it.

The Great Indian GRE Dream – Part 1

As I sit here writing this article I’m sure there are thousands if not millions of students back there in India who are currently preparing for their GRE/GMAT exams. The urge to go abroad just never ends. Studying abroad is simply an excuse. At first thought when you thought of going abroad for studies, the only thing that could come in your silly mind was not studies itself but hundreds of those green things, those chicks, that life, the life we download every single day in episodes as sitcoms and sit in front of our PCs laughing away and hoping one day you’ll get your own ticket abroad. Here’s a reality check for you kids. The Great Indian GRE dream is nothing close to what you’d imagine it to be. It’s a whole new world out there. There are so many misconceptions that are hard wired into our brains by fellow students, agents, so called immigration consultants etc. that we just don’t use 1% of our brain to think real. So Zordy, the lord of the good world, had to issue an advisory. I’ll cover it in 2-3 parts as long as I can find time from my busy schedule (I like using the world schedule here, it sounds I have something real to do).

Eureka! The idea of preparing for GRE/GMAT

In any normal scenario an engineering student starts preparing for a GRE exam just when he’s got that I’m-screwed feeling. This normally happens by the mid-third-year-period when campus placements have been like Monsoons, CAT seemed like a hard animal to capture or your girlfriend started preparing for it too. You browse a couple of sites, Google your way through universities and it seems pretty much a walk in the park. You make up your mind and tell your parents about your decision to rock the west and they waste no time in throwing parties, telling everyone that their bright kid has a sun-bright future abroad. Everything looks green great. Your blood circulation and bowel movements reflect your happiness. All set?

Reality check: This is the point, a very important one I must say, where you need to think a lot. A lot doesn’t mean that you google harder but a lot means that you really put your brain to test. This is where most people go wrong. Going abroad to study just because the next door Chunnu-Munnu or that distant relative’s son/daughter laid their flags abroad isn’t entirely a reason. Just because you think you’ll study abroad you’ll also get to settle there isn’t always correct. Give it a proper thought. Ask yourself all those WH questions. If you can satisfy yourself with the answers only then decide on studying abroad.

Some of these questions are a must;

Why do you want to study abroad?

Which course would you take up?

Will the course help you in your career plans?

How long will it take?

How much will it cost?

Is there an alternative to studying abroad?

These are just few of the questions one must ask himself before actually deciding on studying abroad. I shall cover more in the next part. Thanks for your patience.
