Movie Review: Wanted

It’s almost 4 in the morning but I had to finish this one. After all it was on my list of must-watch flicks this summer. Wanted is one hell of an action movie. James McAvoy is simply superb and Angelina Jolie fits in brilliantly. Full of special effects this is one movie I really wanted to watch in the theaters. Morgan Freeman was wasted, totally. On the whole a must-watch no nonsense super action flick.

My first Facebook Application: OyeLetsGo!

my first facebook application

I am supposed to come up with something for a Summer Training project. I can’t bang my head into Java (that’s actually what I am supposed to do) so I decided to play with Facebook instead. After a little reading and a lot of head banging I am finally there! All that time spent earlier on developing in PHP, MySQL and JavaScript finally paid off. The application is for movie reviews. I plan to integrate it with an upcoming venture in the future especially when Facebook Connect has been announced. The application is still in an Alpha stage. A lot of work needs to be done. That’s on my agenda for the entire next week. Wish me luck!

India Developing US $10 Laptop!

India developing a $10 laptop

Now here’s some news. India is said to be developing a US $10 Laptop. The laptop is targeted at higher education applications. A research for the new lost-cost laptop is being carried out in Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai. Although no specifications were shared in the press conference today there are some indications that the Government shall be providing a subsidy. In the press conference it was also declared that the Indian Government plans to provide free bandwidth for education purposes to every Indian. Whoa! How is the sleepy Government going to do this? India is already in such a bloody Broadband mess.

The Indian Government did not sign up with the One Laptop Per Child program which aimed at providing low-cost laptops for educational purposes. Instead the Education Ministry felt they could do better than the OLPC program. All this while every superhero out there is having a hard time trying to come up with a $100 low-cost laptop. Some feel a $100 isn’t possible, at least not for the next few years. So what is the Government gonna come up with now? A $10 box of sugar to impress the vote bank? I say it’s going to be a $10 box of crap!

Update: It appears that the Government screwed it up on the number. Now it appears that they are aiming for a $100 laptop as per the update transcript. I wonder if that number would increase further.

Omar Abdullah in Mission Istaanbul

omar abdullah in mission istaanbul

Mission Istaanbul released last week and just as I predicted, it has been a big flop. The film stars Omar Abdullah as himself. Omar himself seems hopeless with the flick.

So MY movie has finally been released. I say my movie because it’’s the only one I”ve had anything to do with. The critics have been merciless with it and no one has who reviewed it has given it more than two stars.

He is one of my favourite politicians. Looks like there’s still a long way to go for Omar Abdullah, the actor. Here’s wishing him a lot of success!

Here comes the Google Search killer!

Ex-Googlers have got together to bring out a new cool search engine called Cuil (pronounced cool.) The last time it’s developer Anna Patterson developed something similar it was purchased by search engine leader Google Inc. This time Anna says her search engine is not for sale. She quit Google in 2006 to develop a new comprehensive search engine. Backed by $33 Million in venture capital, Cuil has started processing search requests from today.

google killer search engine Cuil!

Cuil’s search engine index spans a whopping 120 Billion web pages. That is roughly three times the Google search index and ten times the MSN Search index. What makes Cuil different from Google and other conventional search engines is that it drills down the content of the page and doesn’t lay stress on ranking the quality and quantity of links on the web page. Cuil displays search results in a horizontal magazine fashion along with images. There are sidebars to further refine the search results. Whether Cuil will be a Google Search killer or not might still be a long distance ahead but it could certainly give Google a run for their money. Cuil joins a list of other search engines currently trying to grab the attention of web users. It includes start-ups like Teoma, Vivisimo, Snap, Mahalo and, recently Powerset which was acquired by Microsoft this month. All the best Cuil!
