A college prospectus helpsĀ build the impression about the college for prospective students. Innocent students seeking admissions to various engineering, medical, management etc. colleges in India are totally conned by the college prospectus. The glossy pages showcase the amazing college infrastructure, shining class rooms, brilliant faculty from Heaven, bright future through campus placements and a million other lies. Its only when they actually join the college that they realize the gravity of the situation. So here’s Harry to the rescue! I’ll decode some of the stuff you usually find on a college prospectus and what it actually means.
Excellent library with more than 50,000 titles!
Libraries are the most abused. You will never find the title you’re desperate for. The staff isn’t helpful at all. In my case the only person that makes a hell of a noise in the library is the librarian himself. Don’t depend on the library. Library fines are key sources of revenue for colleges. Sometimes you’ll be charged for returning books in times as well. Yeah welcome to hell!
Well equipped Computer Labs with Internet facility
Now this is what I really hate! Computer systems in labs with more viruses than software. You are promised a rocket speed Internet access on the college prospectus. You come into the lab and you won’t even find a web browser on the system. Even still if you’re lucky enough to get your hands on one you won’t be able to access the Internet. Why? They don’t have internet access in labs! And still if by any chance you are even luckier and you find Internet access available to you, you won’t be able to browse the net. Why? No reason! You just can’t access the net. Sit down and write stupid programs.

BSNL Dataone is God’s way of punishing you for your sins. I still remember how I got my broadband connection installed. It took me a week long of frequent visits, requests and clarifications. I begged them for a broadband connection! Not that I am a huge fan but they were and they still are the only broadband service provider in my locality. BSNL Dataone is the best if it keeps working. The moment it goes down you’re in hell baby! The customer care is helpless. The local exchange doesn’t know what broadband means. The billing screw-ups are the worst. So when you have to change your tariff plan you need to write an application and go to the nearest local exchange. Unlike Airtel where you simply have to make a call and they don’t take more than a day to change your tariff plan, BSNL Dataone can only change your plan from the next billing cycle. No there is no mantra involved. They simply don’t have a software capable of doing it.
So I get the application printed out, fax it to my dad, he signs on it and sends it back to me. I go to the telephone exchange. What follows might just prepare you for hell. I walk in for the millionth time. I have been a regular at the local exchange trying to get some or the other problem sorted out regarding my broadband connection. So I just go straight to the lady who takes these applications. She is operating on a computer in front of her like it’s an X-Box 360. Suddenly she walks out of the office. She comes back in after 10 minutes. She looks at her screen and is amazed. She tells everyone that she is downloading something and she can’t entertain any queries. No one in the room is shocked. I expect a screw-up everytime I go there. Some newbies hopelessly wait. I left the exchange. I came back in the evening. This time there was a different lady. She seemed like she’ll do something at least. When my turn came she simply told me she’ll have to re-enter her password so just hold on. I’ll hold on baby. For broadband I’ll do your veggies too! She thinks for a moment. Somehow she showed mercy and said she’ll do it. She took my application and I was like ‘Wow man!’ Now I really hope they change my plan to the unlimited one by next month. They have 3 full days to screw-up. I hope they don’t. I really hope they don’t!

Here it goes! Stuck on your computer for a long time? Can’t get the chicken tandoori call centers to solve your problems? I’ll help you in solving all your tech related problems including hardware, software or web. In turn you pay me a small flat fee of $1 and help me raise money for college. Sounds cheap? Well then give it try!

Adding a GB of RAM to the notebook feels so good right now! Really! I’m done with Windows XP now and I have moved to Windows Vista on my Lenovo notebook. Just like what I did with my desktop machine. Not that I’m a fan of Microsoft or the Windows scam but change is the spice of life! Well I’d say the summer has just begin for me. I’ll be experimenting heavily with a lot of Operating Systems. I expect myself to screw up a number of times so I’m getting ready a new cheap test machine for that purpose.
Linux? Bring it on!
It feels go good to be back in Chandigarh! Especially after such a long torturous examination period. So we decided to get started with the much awaited and much delayed vacations with trying out a new multiplex in town. DT Cinemas is located at the newly opened DLF City Center Mall right next to the Infosys building at the Rajiv Gandhi Technology Park at Chandigarh. I booked the tickets online at BookmyShow. The online movie ticket booking was really smooth. I’d highly recommend BookmyShow!
The mall is pretty good itself. It’s the second mall here in Chandigarh. Although it’s not completely finished as yet you can still spot some major brands there. Coming back to DT Cinemas, they have a box office right inside the mall on the ground floor itself. If you’ve booked your tickets online then you won’t need to wait for long. The audis are located on the third floor. The seats are pretty comfortable. Good leg space. This is something missing at Fun Cinemas at Chandigarh. The only thing lacking here at DT Cinemas was good food. Quality isn’t anywhere on the menu. The prices are explosive as expected from a multiplex. The staff is pretty lazy. Expect them to miss sugar with your coffee. On the whole they have a lot of growing up to do until they’re able to provide a fine movie experience for the movie-goers. I’m still wondering how PVR will open up to the audiences here in Chandigarh. A couple of more new malls are expected to open up in the coming 2-3 months!
